The Curse Workers: White Cat by Holly Black

Cassel is the only non-worker in a family of well known curse workers. With the simple touch of a bare hand his mother can alter people's emotions and his brothers can bring good luck or broken bones. Things start to change for Cassel when he wakes up in the middle on the night on the roof of his dorm, apparently ready to jump off. Not the suicidal type, he suscepts someone has cursed him. And when a white cat and strange dreams invade his life, Cassel must find out quickly what's going on before something terrible happens to him.

Holly Black has created a wonderful, yet terrifying, world where everyone wears gloves to protect themselves from curses. White Cat is fast paced, exciting, and unusual; I can't wait to read the next book in this amazing series!

Fever Crumb by Philip Reeve

Fever, an orphan raised by the Order of Engineers, lives in a London of the distant future where some catastrophic past event has left the world with limited technology or understanding of science. When Fever goes to work with a local archeologist to uncover Ancient tech she begins to remember events and details about the former overlord of London, Auric Godshawk. The truly strange thing is Godshawk and his people had been killed and driven out of London before Fever was born, yet she has clear memories of them. Does Fever has some link to Godshawk? Does anyone know anything about Fever's past? And is it possible someone may be trying to kill Fever because of her suspected connection to Godshawk?

A brilliantly written, exciting and complex story of a girl uncovering her past and discovering who she is. Fever Crumb is a prequel to the Hungry City Chronicles, a series of four incredible books, the first of which is Mortal Engines. I highly recommend any book by Philip Reeve including Here Lies Arthur, a story of King Arthur, and Larklight, the first in a series of hilarious and action packed Victorian space adventures.

Free Comic Book Day - May 1st!

Started in 2002, Free Comic Book Day is a day when participating comic book stores across the U.S. and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their store. This year's Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 1st.

Some of this year's free comics include Iron Man, G.I. Joe, War of the Supermen, Shrek, Green Hornet #1, Toy Story, and Owly and Friends.

Hugh Jackman, star of X-Men Origins: Wolverine talks about Free Comic Book Day, and the importance of comics in fighting illiteracy.

For a list of participating comic book stores around you as well as the complete list of comics, visit the Free Comic Book Day website.

Music Streaming

Streaming music online is becoming a more popular way of listening to your favorite songs while away from your MP3 player or your music collection at home. Here are just a few of the great sites out there that let you stream music over the internet.

Grooveshark
Their layout is similar to iTunes--you can build your own playlists, mark your favorite songs, and share songs and playlists with other Grooveshark users, as well as friends on Facebook and Myspace.

Lala
This site's "Music Mover" software lets you sync your Lala account with the music on your computer, giving you access to your music collection from anywhere. You can listen to a song you don't own once for free, and then buy either unlimited online access or an MP3 download.

Last.fm
Last.fm offers the ability to create "radio stations" based on a particular artist or song and share music and pictures with other fans. Their most well-known feature is the ability for last.fm to generate a chart that lists your most recently played songs, which can be posted anywhere online.

Pandora
Like last.fm, Pandora lets users create radio stations based on an artist or song they already like, and then further customize that station by giving each song a thumbs up or thumbs down. Great for finding new music that is similar to your current interests.

After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick

Meet Jeffrey Alper, "That Boy Who Had Cancer." But Jeffrey has been in remission for five years and instead of dealing with chemo therapy is trying to figure out eighth grade. Between his best friend Tad (fellow cancer survivor), this new girl Lindsey (who seems to really like Jeffrey), his older brother running off to play drums in Africa, and trying to pass his math class, he's got plenty to worry about. Thank goodness Jeffrey has a tremendous sense of humor to keep him going!

After Ever After is about what happens in the years following cancer treatment; dealing with the after effects of the chemo drugs and the emotional stress on your family while still trying to have a normal life. And for those of you who've read Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie, you'll remember Jeffrey back when all the cancer stuff was going on.

Pastworld by Ian Beck

Imagine if you could travel to Victorian London for a vacation, no time travel involved, just a short ride on an airship. Everyone would dress and talk like it was the late 1800's, food would cost one shilling and sixpence and there would be no cell phones, computers, or electricity. In Pastworld you can do just that, thanks to the Buckland Corporation. They've created a theme park of sorts that exactly duplicates Victorian London. But when a serial killer, the Fantom, begins murdering residents and tourists, the excitement increases to dangerous levels.

A wonderful cast of characters, a little bit of science fiction, a thrilling mystery, and some great historical elements combine for an exciting novel in Pastworld by Ian Beck
